CO2 Airsoft Rifles
Check out our wide selection of CO2 Airsoft Rifles and SMGs!
CO2 airsoft rifles and SMGs are powered by a removable CO2 cartridge usually based in the magazine, CO2 stored in the canister is then delivered to the nozzle for both realistic blow back and to propel the airsoft BB out the gun. CO2 offers higher pressure than green gas, giving greater power but also allows for stable operation in colder weather. CO2 guns can shoot either semi-auto or full-auto and can be either have a non-blowback (NBB) or gas blowback style (GBB) of action for most magazine fed rifles. Notable brands for CO2 rifles include Marushin, G&G and Umarex.

Similar to CO2-powered airsoft pistols, CO2 airsoft rifles typically use 12-gram cartridges filled with liquid carbon dioxide to not only power the replica but also provide players with realistic blowback. Available in semi-auto and full-auto configurations, CO2 airsoft rifles offer distinct advantages over green gas-powered airsoft rifles, even in non-blowback (NBB) platforms.
Beginner airsoft players who want to try their first blowback often gravitate towards CO2 airsoft rifles or pistols before graduating to gas blowback (GBB) platforms.
What Are CO2 Airsoft Rifles?
CO2 airsoft rifles are airsoft replicas powered by carbon dioxide (CO2) capsules that provide the pressurized gas necessary to work the internals and propel airsoft BBs out of the muzzle.
These capsules are often housed in the magazine or stock, depending on the replica’s design and configuration. Airsoft players can choose from non-blowback (NBB) and blowback variants from many popular manufacturers, available across multiple platforms and price points.
How Do CO2 Airsoft Rifles Work?
When you pull the trigger of a CO2 airsoft rifle, the hammer strikes a gas release valve that releases liquid CO2 from the 12-gram capsules.
As the carbon dioxide hits the air, it converts into a high-pressure gas that works the internals necessary to lob a BB down range. In blowback versions, the released CO2 provides simulated recoil.
Compared to green gas-powered airsoft rifles, CO2 versions can offer greater power due to their higher operating pressures. Because CO2 is more stable than green gas at varying temperatures, it’s also ideal for year-round use, especially on airsoft fields that see stark differences in seasonal weather patterns. However, both types of airsoft rifles are available in semi-auto and full-auto.
