Product Description:

Real Steel Background

The Heckler & Koch G28 was born directly from the German Bundeswehr's combat experience in Afghanistan, where infantry units found the effective range of their standard 5.56mm assault rifles  roughly 400 metres  insufficient for engaging enemy personnel in the rugged mountain terrain. The German military required a squad-level designated marksman rifle capable of delivering accurate fire out to 600 metres and suppressive fire to 800 metres, delivering precision beyond the reach of standard issue weapons without the weight and complexity of a full sniper system. In 2010, Heckler & Koch entered the HK417 battle rifle in the Bundeswehr's competition, but the military ultimately rejected the 417 prototype due to performance concerns. However, in a twist of adoption history, the Bundeswehr returned to Heckler & Koch the following year and selected the MR308  the civilian competition version of the HK417  which was subsequently adopted into service under the official designation G28. The G28 is chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO and features a 420mm cold-hammer-forged free-floating barrel, chrome-lined internally and finished externally with four longitudinal flutes that both reduce weight and increase rigidity and heat dissipation. Every G28 is factory-guaranteed to deliver 1.5 MOA or better accuracy for ten-round groups with standard issue ammunition, and approximately 75 percent of its parts are interchangeable with the HK417. The rifle operates on a short-stroke gas piston system with a two-position gas regulator for reliable cycling with both standard and subsonic ammunition, paired with a conventional rotating bolt. In its Standard configuration the G28 carries a long handguard, bipod, and telescoping stock with adjustable cheek rest, typically topped with a Schmidt & Bender PMII 3-20x50 optic with an auxiliary micro red dot for close-quarters backup. The rifle gained international prominence in April 2016 when the United States Army selected the export variant G28E under its Compact Semi-Automatic Sniper System (CSASS) program, procuring over 3,600 rifles as the M110A1 to succeed the Knight's Armament M110 SASS. The G28 has since seen service with the German Army, the Republic of Korea's 707th Special Mission Group, Turkish special forces, Russia's SSO, and in 2023 the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force selected the G28E2 as its next designated marksman rifle. The engraved markings found on the rifle "ROUND LOG!" and "SCHUSSZAHL DOKUMENTIEREN!" (German for "document the shot count") reflect the DMR's precision-shooting heritage, where maintaining an accurate log of fired rounds is essential for tracking barrel wear and maintaining long-range consistency.

Product Details

The Umarex (VFC) G28 gas blowback rifle faithfully recreates the iconic designated marksman platform in a handsome tan finish, with all major metal components coated in the authentic HK RAL8000 military sand colour that matches the real firearm's signature finish. The build is anchored by a CNC-machined aluminium upper receiver carrying a full-length Picatinny rail on top, laser engraved with the "ROUND LOG!" and "SCHUSSZAHL DOKUMENTIEREN!" markings that replicate the genuine G28's text, alongside a CNC-machined aluminium lower receiver engraved with the "HK G28" marking. Surrounding the barrel is a 398mm G28 style free-floating handguard in matching RAL8000 tan, featuring a Picatinny rail along its top surface plus 248mm sections of Picatinny rail on the left, right, and underside positioned at the rear of the handguard, allowing for bipods, vertical grips, laser modules, and other tactical accessories to be mounted exactly where the operator needs them. A built-in flip-up front sight is integrated directly into the handguard, and it pairs with the removable and adjustable 416A5 style flip-up rear sight also finished in CNC-machined RAL8000 tan aluminium, together forming a low-profile iron sight line that deploys instantly when no optic is fitted. The barrel assembly comprises a metal 400mm outer barrel crowned with a steel 92mm G28 DMR style muzzle brake, replicating the distinctive recoil-reducing muzzle device of the real rifle while providing a substantial presence at the front of the platform. Control furniture consists of a polymer tan pistol grip and a polymer tan G28 adjustable stock mounted on a CNC-machined RAL8000 tan four-position stock pipe, allowing the length of pull to be tailored to the shooter. The stock is exceptionally refined: the stock rest can be adjusted to four different heights to suit the shooter's cheek weld position for optimum sight alignment, and at the rear of the stock a rotating gear wheel mechanism extends the polymer stock pad backward by an additional 30mm beyond the normal adjustment range, dramatically extending overall length when needed. Each side of the stock pad carries a sling swivel for versatile carrying configurations, while a further steel sling swivel is positioned at the rear of the receiver. Feeding the rifle is a polymer 20-round G28 gas magazine with a polymer tan magazine base, styled to match the translucent or polymer magazines of the real platform. The small parts package is entirely functional and metal: a steel bolt catch, steel magazine release, metal curved trigger within a metal tan trigger guard, and a steel forward assist complement the polymer ambidextrous fire selector for full right- or left-handed operation. The CNC-machined tan charging handle mirrors the real rifle's design, and the metal bolt carrier is engraved with the "HK" marking. Internally, this G28 is configured for semi-automatic shooting only, with steel internal components throughout a choice that honours the DMR's role as a precision semi-auto marksman rifle while delivering reliable, consistent single-shot performance with the satisfying metallic operation VFC gas systems are known for.
