Product Description:
Real Steel Background
The Smith & Wesson Model 29 stands as one of the most iconic revolvers in firearms history, a massive N-frame double-action revolver built around the most powerful handgun cartridge of its era. The story of the Model 29 begins with legendary handgunner Elmer Keith, whose handloads pushed the .44 Special cartridge to its absolute limits and inspired Smith & Wesson to develop an entirely new round around his ballistic work. Working with Remington, the company created the .44 Magnum ? a lengthened, high-pressure .44 Special case ? and the first Model 29 revolver was produced on December 15, 1955, going on official sale on January 19, 1956 under the name "S&W .44 Magnum Revolver." In 1957, Smith & Wesson introduced its numerical designation system, and the revolver formally became the Model 29. At the time of its introduction, it was the most powerful production handgun in the world, a title it held for years against all challengers. The revolver became a global cultural phenomenon in 1971 when Clint Eastwood wielded a Model 29 in the film Dirty Harry, delivering the famous "most powerful handgun in the world" speech that sent demand through the roof ? retailers could not keep the Model 29 in stock, and collectors paid premiums for the privilege of owning one. In 1990, Smith & Wesson established its Performance Center, a custom division founded by two of the company's most skilled in-house gunsmiths. Initially focused on competition-specific models built from production guns, the Performance Center evolved with the introduction of dedicated CNC machinery, enabling it to design and manufacture entirely new models from scratch and establish itself as the maker of the company's premium limited-production firearms, each hand-built by specialists with competitive shooting experience. Among the Performance Center's most distinctive creations is the V-Comp, a competition-oriented variant of the Model 29 chambered in .44 Magnum, distinguished by a front compensator mounted at the muzzle to vent gas and reduce recoil, paired with a counterweight beneath the barrel to tame muzzle rise during rapid fire. With its tuned action, white-outline rear sight, and competition-focused ergonomics, the V-Comp represents the Performance Center's philosophy of extracting maximum accuracy and controllability from the legendary .44 Magnum platform.
Product Details
Tanaka Works reproduces this Performance Center masterpiece as a gas revolver in the company's Ver.3 Heavy Weight specification. At the heart of the model is a proprietary Japanese manufacturing technique known as Heavy Weight, a polymer densification process unique to Japan's model gun industry that transforms standard polymer resin into a material with the visual appearance, tactile texture, and substantial weight of real metal. Components constructed entirely from polymer ? the barrel, cylinder, and frame ? emerge from this process looking indistinguishable from machined steel to the eye, carrying the dense, cold-to-the-touch feel and satisfying heft of a genuine firearm, despite being made entirely of polymer. The 110mm outer barrel is molded in heavyweight polymer with the "Performance Center" engraving on the left side and "44. MAGNUM" on the right, faithfully reproducing the rollmarks of the real V-Comp. A 25mm heavyweight polymer compensator is fitted at the muzzle, replicating the distinctive V-Comp compensator with its bottom counterweight design ? a feature added on the real firearm to reduce recoil and muzzle rise, reproduced here for its unmistakable competition aesthetic. The heavyweight polymer frame carries the engraved "S&W" logo marking, while the heavyweight polymer cylinder holds up to 13 rounds of 6mm BBs through Tanaka's inner magazine system, with the gas charging port positioned at the rear of the cylinder to preserve the revolver's clean external appearance. A rubber pistol grip with a non-slip textured surface and contoured finger grooves allows the shooter to grip tighter and more comfortably, providing secure control during manipulation and aiming. The small parts are finished in metal: the trigger, hammer, and cylinder release are all constructed in metal for realistic weight and positive engagement, and the ejector rod is made of steel for durability and authenticity. Both the front sight and the adjustable rear sight are metal, delivering precise, fully functional sighting that mirrors the competition-focused configuration of the real V-Comp. Powering the model is the Tanaka PEGASUS v3 gas system, the third evolution of the company's Pegasus series in which the gas reservoir and magazine mechanism are integrated directly into the cylinder. The Version 3 system refines real-shot performance to draw out the full potential of the Pegasus architecture, delivering improved stability that is less affected by ambient temperature and producing a more powerful, vigorous trajectory with each pull of the trigger.
