It is a six-shot, double-action revolver, meaning it can be fired either by a long trigger pull that cocks and releases the hammer or by manually cocking the hammer first for a lighter trigger pull. Introduced in 1955, it was hailed as the world's most powerful production handgun at the time.
The revolver was developed from the work of ballistic pioneer Elmer Keith, who pushed for a more powerful handgun cartridge, leading to the creation of the .44 Magnum. Smith & Wesson built its robust "N-frame" to handle the new round. While it was always respected by handgun hunters and enthusiasts, its fame reached iconic status when Clint Eastwood wielded it as Inspector "Dirty Harry" Callahan in the 1971 film, creating a massive surge in public demand.

Although constructed from polymer, this model benefits from a specialized heavyweight manufacturing technique. This process gives the polymer components the substantial weight and authentic texture of real metal, creating a convincingly realistic experience.
