The Mk 18 carbine traces its lineage to the Close Quarters Battle Receiver (CQBR) programme administered by the Naval Surface Warfare Center Crane Division for U.S. Special Operations Command in the late 1990s. Developed at the request of U.S. Navy Special Warfare ? most visibly the SEAL community ? the CQBR was not a brand-new rifle but an upper-receiver conversion: a 10.3-inch barrel assembly mounted on a converted M4A1 lower receiver, effectively shrinking the standard M4A1 carbine into a compact personal-defence weapon optimised for ship boarding, vehicle operations, and close-quarters room clearing. Externally, the rifle is built around a metal upper receiver engraved with "MK17" and "5.56" markings, paired with a metal lower receiver carrying the Daniel Defense logo. The front end consists of a metal 245mm MK18 free-float handguard surrounding a metal 245mm outer barrel finished with a 45mm muzzle brake, giving the compact 10.5-inch carbine its recognisable proportions.
