The URGI USASOC Rifle is an upgraded variant of the M4 carbine, specifically the Upper Receiver Group - Improved (URGI) developed for the United States Army Special Operations Command (USASOC). It's designed to enhance the performance of existing M4A1 rifles used by elite units like Special Forces Groups and the 75th Ranger Regiment, featuring improvements in accuracy, reliability, and modularity.
Key features include a cold hammer-forged (CHF) barrel - often a 14.5-inch government-profile mid-length from Daniel Defense with a tuned gas port for better handling of the M855A1 ammunition, reducing recoil and improving hit probability. It also has the Geissele Super Modular Rail MK16 (SMR MK16) handguard with M-LOK slots for accessories, a Geissele Airborne Charging Handle, and a SureFire 4-prong flash hider (pinned and welded for civilian legality). The setup replaced earlier Block II configurations to include modern elements like M-LOK compatibility and mid-length gas systems.
A collaboration between Geissele Automatics and Daniel Defense, the URGI was introduced around 2018 as an upgrade program, not a full new rifle, and is now fielded across USASOC units.
