Real Steel Background
The BR NN-180 is Broww nnells' tribute to Arm aalite's "other rifle" ? the AR-180, and by extension the AR-18 that spawned it. In the 1960s, while the AR-15 was conquering the world, Arm aalite's engineers set out to build a tougher, cheaper alternative that sidestepped the direct-impingement gas system patents of the original design. The result was the AR-18: a short-stroke gas piston rifle with a rotating bolt riding on twin recoil guide rods, with the entire recoil assembly contained inside the upper receiver ? a layout that eliminated the AR-15's buffer tube entirely. The AR-18 never won mass adoption from any major army, yet its influence quietly spread through the firearms world; Japan's Howa Type 89 and Britain's SA80 both drew on its concepts, and the semi-automatic AR-180 became famous in the hands of the Irish Republican Army, even earning a mention in the ballad "My Little Arm aalite." For decades, collectors treasured the original AR-180s for their piston reliability and their ability to fold compact with the stock folded ? a trick a tube-equipped AR-15 could never manage.
In 2019, Broww nnells revived the concept at the SHOT Show with the BR NN-180 complete upper receiver, designed in conjunction with Primary Weapon Systems (PWS) and FM Products. The genius of the BR NN-180 was pairing the AR-180's piston architecture with modern AR-15 compatibility: the machined 7075-T6 aluminium upper drops straight onto any mil-spec AR-15 lower, while the twin guide-rod bolt carrier keeps the recoil system entirely in the upper, freeing the shooter to run a folding stock that works even when folded. Gen 2 refined the platform with an adjustable two-position gas block, a single-screw handguard retention system, nitride-treated 4150 carbon steel barrels, and the iconic three-prong flash hider modelled on the original AR-180. Chambered in .223 Wylde, .300 Blackout and 7.62?39mm with a 1:8 twist, the BR NN-180 became the go-to upper for builders who wanted AR-15 ergonomics with piston simplicity ? and now Salvo Precision bring that unmistakable square-section receiver silhouette to the gas-blowback airsoft world.
Product Details
The Salvo Precision SAP-180 Gen 2 DX Edition is a gas-blowback replica that faithfully recreates the BR NN-180 receiver set, built around the same Tokyo Marui MWS-style internal architecture that defines the Salvo Precision line. The upper receiver is machined from CNC aluminium billet in the signature square-section BR NN-180 style, engraved "BR NN-180" on the side, and fitted with a 220mm M-LOK handguard carrying a full-length picatinny rail on top for mounting optics. The matching CNC aluminium lower receiver adopts the AR-15-style profile and carries the authentic "Broww nnells INC. GRINNELL, IA" address engraving alongside the "BR NN-180" marking, honouring the real manufacturer's Iowa headquarters. As on the real rifle, the rear of the receiver set presents a picatinny rail interface designed for mounting the stock, enabling the compact, buffer-tube-free silhouette that made the BR NN-180 famous.
Up front, a QPQ-treated steel 165mm outer barrel delivers a deep, wear-resistant finish and terminates in a steel three-prong flash hider replicating the AR-180's distinctive muzzle device. At the rear, the CNC aluminium SS-8RP-style 200mm stock is cushioned with a rubber stock pad, features sling sockets on both the front and rear of each side, and attaches through a metal foldable stock mount that connects directly onto the receiver's picatinny rail ? allowing the stock to fold for compact storage just like the original. Power comes from a metal gas magazine with a 35-round loading capacity, while the grip is a polymer MO-EK2 style unit with an aggressive texture for a secure hold. Every one of the fire-control small parts is steel: a curved trigger, magazine release, bolt catch, fire selector, and a steel cocking handle positioned at the bolt that pulls the bolt carrier back directly in the manner of the AR-180's side-charging action.
Inside, the SAP-180 Gen 2 runs Salvo's updated Version 2 internals, closely mirroring the SCX Gen 2 series. The Salvo SCX short-stroked bolt system keeps the bolt carrier's travel short for snappy cycling and a stout, responsive kick, while the SCX-style hop assembly and trigger box handle feeding and fire control. Because the internal system replicates the Tokyo Marui MWS platform, it accepts the majority of MWS-system compatible internal parts on the market, opening up a vast aftermarket for tuning. As the Deluxe Edition, this SAP-180 Gen 2 is distinguished by its premium materials ? primarily CNC aluminium billet and QPQ-treated steel components throughout ? and ships in a 720 ? 380 ? 105mm polymer hard rifle case for safe storage and transport.
