About Real M79 Grenade Launcher
The M79 grenade launcher is a single-shot, shoulder-fired weapon that fires 40mm grenades. Developed in the U.S. in the late 1950s, it entered service in 1961 and became iconic during the Vietnam War. Known as the "blooper" or "thumper" due to its distinctive firing sound, the M79 uses a break-action design, allowing easy reloading. It fires various 40x46mm grenades, including high-explosive, smoke, and illumination rounds, making it versatile for different combat scenarios. The M79 has an effective range of about 150 meters for point targets and up to 350 meters for area targets. It weighs 6.5 pounds and is 29 inches long, making it lightweight and portable. Its accuracy and reliability made it a favorite among troops. Although it was eventually replaced by the M203 grenade launcher, which could be mounted under an M16 rifle, the M79 remains in limited use today, particularly in special operations and law enforcement. Its design influenced later grenade launchers, and it remains a symbol of 20th-century infantry firepower evolution.
