About Real COLT M16A1

The M16A1 is a selective-fire assault rifle that was adopted by the United States military as an improved version of the original M16 rifle.  The rifle operates using a gas system with a rotating bolt and has a cyclic rate of fire between 700 and 800 rounds per minute, with an effective range of about 460 meters.
The development of the M16A1 was directly shaped by the difficult early field performance of the M16 during the Vietnam War. The original M16 was rushed into service without certain crucial features recommended by its designers, and it was issued with a different type of gunpowder that caused excessive fouling. These issues, combined with a lack of cleaning supplies and training, led to widespread malfunctions and jams in combat. A congressional investigation prompted the Army to implement a series of modifications to correct these problems.
