About Real Model 1897 'EARLY RIOT GUN'
The term "Model 1897 'Early Riot Gun'" refers both to a historically significant firearm and to a popular non-firing replica of it. The original is a variant of the Winchester Model 1897 pump-action shotgun, designed by John Moses Browning and produced from 1897 to 1957. The Riot Gun version first appeared in 1898 and was intended for law enforcement and civilian use rather than military or hunting. Its defining features are a shorter 20?inch barrel and a cylinder bore, which made the gun more compact and effective at close range. Because of these qualities, the Model 1897 Riot Gun became a standard tool for groups such as the Texas Rangers, prison guards, railroad police, and express company agents who protected banks and trains during the early 20th century.
When collectors speak of an "early" Riot Gun, they refer to production models made before roughly 1910. These early guns have several distinctive characteristics. They typically feature a "round knob" stock, meaning the rear of the grip has a rounded shape. They also have a solid frame receiver, whereas later versions used a take?down design that could be easily disassembled. The forend on an early gun is grooved, full?round, and made of walnut, held in place by three screws. The finish is a high?polish blue, and some screws even show a "nitre blue" treatment. These details make early production models highly prized by collectors.
One of the most famous features of the real Winchester Model 1897 is its "slam?fire" capability. The gun lacks a trigger disconnector, which means that if the shooter holds the trigger down and works the pump action, the gun will fire as soon as the action closes. This allows all six shells to be discharged very rapidly, a devastating advantage in close?quarters situations.
About Tanaka Model 1897 'EARLY RIOT GUN' Heavy Weight Version 2 Model Gun
Tanaka has faithfully replicated this historically significant firearm, which has a legacy of over 120 years in the world of real guns. It was commonly used by the U.S. military a century ago and saw action across major conflicts such as World War I, World War II, and the Korean War, with global production exceeding one million units. This is a firearm steeped in history and deep historical background. Tanaka has meticulously reproduced this gun, and its external appearance, as well as the fine surface markings, closely resemble those of the real firearm.
This Tanaka Model 1897 'EARLY RIOT GUN' Heavy Weight Version 2 Model Gun is made of polymer material, but also incorporates Japan's unique Heavyweight technique, which makes the otherwise polymer model gun feel very similar to real metal?both in weight and texture. The model gun features a 495mm outer barrel, a heavyweight frame, a steel 385mm magazine tube, a real wood forend, a real wood stock with a metal stock pad, includes two dummy shotgun shells, and also has small metal parts such as a metal hammer and a metal trigger.
Please note that this is only a model gun and has no real firing capability, but it still operates like a real shotgun. When you pull back the forend, the hammer also cocks; pulling the trigger makes the hammer strike forward, producing a metallic clicking sound. When you pull the forend back again, the dummy shotgun shell in the chamber will eject, creating a very realistic feel. If you enjoy collecting historical firearms, this is a must-have for your collection. It can also be used as a movie prop.
