The rifle now officially designated as the M7, formerly known as the XM7 and XM5, was selected by the United States Army in 2022 as its new standard-issue infantry weapon. Following initial production and testing, the first of these rifles were issued to the U.S. Army's 101st Airborne Division in early 2024. By May 2025, the weapon had completed its final testing and received its official military classification as the M7. Feedback from soldiers has been mixed, with the most common concern being the rifle's weight, which is greater than the M4 it replaces. The Army has developed a "Product Improved" variant that uses lighter materials to address this issue, and a shorter-barreled carbine version is also being tested for roles where a compact weapon is preferable.
This system represents the most significant shift in American infantry small arms technology since the adoption of the M16 rifle family in the 1960s, marking the end of the 5.56mm era for frontline combat troops.

To adapt to different operational needs, this rifle comes with two fully functional charging handles: the traditional one located at the rear of the receiver, and an additional side-mounted bolt handle on the left side?both can be used normally to cycle the GBB action, providing convenient ambidextrous operation without excessive complexity.
The stock is very similar to that of the MCX series, mounting onto a Picatinny rail at the rear of the receiver. It includes a polymer SLKK-style dark earth stock with a 6-position adjustable dark earth stock pipe and a folding stock adapter for secure attachment to the rail. The magazine is a polymer 30-round L7AWM-style design. Numerous small metal components enhance realism and durability, including steel ambidextrous selector, steel ambidextrous magazine release, steel ambidextrous bolt catch, steel sling sockets on both sides (one set on the handguard and another on the receiver), steel dust cover, steel bolt, steel forward assist, metal trigger, and steel receiver pins.
