Product Description:
Real Steel Background
The MK12 MOD 1 grew out of the lessons American special operations learned in Afghanistan in 2001. The terrain there threw engagements at ranges the standard 14.5-inch M4A1 carbine was never optimised for, and operators wanted a rifle that could reach out like a sniper's gun without giving up the handling and magazine compatibility of the M4 family. Working through the SOPMOD programme and the engineers at NSWC Crane, the answer took shape as the Special Purpose Rifle: an 18-inch, 1-in-7-twist heavy barrel in 5.56 NATO, a free-float handguard, precision-grade ammunition, and optics that allowed accurate fire well past the distances a carbine could manage. The first fielded version, the Mk 12 MOD 0, paired a PRI Gen I tube handguard with a crane-style stock and the OPS Inc 12th model suppressor and brake. The MOD 1 that followed refined the recipe with a Knights Armament free-float handguard ? the round match tube carrying the KAC name ? and became the configuration most associated with the rifle.
Neither version was a new rifle from the ground up. The MK12's genius was that it was almost entirely existing parts, deliberately chosen: an M16-pattern receiver set, a match-grade Douglas barrel, a gas system tuned to cycle reliably with a suppressor, and a stock and handguard that solved the two problems a long-barrelled AR always has ? heat and accuracy under a free-floated bore. The result shot sub-MOA with match ammunition, carried on the standard 30-round magazine, and weighed less than a true sniper system. Navy SEALs, Army Rangers, and special reconnaissance elements adopted it as the squad-level precision rifle, filling the gap between the carbine and the bolt gun between roughly 2001 and its gradual replacement by the Mk 11 and later systems.
The MK12 MOD 1 has since become one of the most cloned and admired rifles in the custom AR world. Its silhouette ? long slim handguard, long barrel, fixed A2-style stock, no carry handle clutter ? is instantly recognisable to anyone who follows special operations gear, and it stands as the rifle that proved a carefully selected parts list could turn a service weapon into a precision instrument.
Product Details
GHK builds the MK12 MOD 1 as a gas blowback rifle on its V3 system, fully licensed by Cybergun under the Colt name, and the finish work starts at the receivers: both upper and lower are metal with a CERAKOTE coating, giving the flat, hard-wearing surface that Cerakote is known for, and the lower is engraved with the "COLT" marking under that licence. The handguard is a metal 310mm KAC MK12 tube engraved with the "KAC" marking, reproducing the MOD 1's defining front end, and the barrel is a steel 440mm outer barrel finished by a steel MK12 SPR muzzle brake ? the long, slim, free-floated profile that makes the rifle read as a precision gun at first glance.
Furniture follows the original's fixed-stock configuration. The pistol grip is polymer, and the stock is a polymer 270mm fixed stock fitted with a steel sling swivel at its rear, giving the classic fixed A2-style silhouette and a solid attachment point for sling carry. Feeding comes from a steel V3 gas magazine holding 35 rounds, so the magazine itself is steel rather than a thinner shell.
The small-parts set is steel throughout, and it is a long list: a steel gas block with gas tube, a steel fire selector, a steel bolt catch, a steel magazine release, a steel curved trigger inside a metal trigger guard, a steel dust cover, a steel forward assist, a steel bolt carrier, and steel receiver pins. That is a control group and action built from hard steel end to end, from the gas system at the muzzle end of the rifle to the pins that hold the receivers together.
Internally, the rifle runs the GHK V3 GBB engine with a new V3 steel bolt carrier group, and the nozzle carries an increased cylinder capacity of up to 20 percent, feeding a stronger and more consistent blowback impulse. BB feeding has an optimised stop point for improved ballistics, the hop-up can be adjusted without disassembly through the V3 hop-up revision, and optional detachable bolt carrier counter weights let the user tune the bolt mass and recoil character. The full-length buffer stroke completes the package, running the bolt the whole way for the strongest possible impulse.
