What is Airsoft? | Explained - Ehobby Asia

Airsoft is a recreational activity where participants use replica firearms that shoot small round plastic pellets to simulate military and/or law enforcement scenarios. It originated in Japan in the 1970s, where real gun ownership is strictly regulated.  Airsoft has since spread around the world and is legal in most countries including North America, Canada, Europe, the UK, Scandinavia, Russia, New Zealand, and most countries in Latin America.  Unfortunately, if you live in Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, China, or some other countries where airsoft is highly regulated or banned, then you are out of luck.

In airsoft, players typically wear protective gear such as goggles, face masks, and padded clothing to prevent injury from the BBs. Getting hit by an airsoft BB usually just leaves a sting, but getting shot at close range can occasionally cause minor welts or even breaks in the skin.  The game can be played in various settings such as indoor arenas or outdoor fields, and can involve a range of scenarios from simple team deathmatches to more complex objective-based games.

Airsoft guns are designed to look and feel like real firearms, but they are not capable of firing lethal ammunition. Instead, they use battery-powered motors or compressed gas to fire plastic pellets at relatively low velocities. The pellets are typically 6mm in diameter and weigh between 0.12 to 0.43 grams.  The industry standard for measuring the power of an airsoft gun is presented as the BB's velocity in feet-per-second using a 0.2g 6mm BB.  Typical out-of-the-box velocities range from 250fps - 500fps, although higher velocities can be achieved on some airsoft guns through upgrades.

Airsoft is often used as a training tool for military and law enforcement personnel as it allows for realistic simulations without the risk of serious injury associated with live-fire training. However, it is also enjoyed as a fun and challenging hobby by many enthusiasts around the world.

History of Airsoft

Airsoft is a competitive shooting sport that originated in Japan in the early 1970s. The sport was created as a way for Japanese citizens to own and use firearms, which are heavily restricted in the country. Airsoft guns were designed to resemble real firearms but fire non-lethal plastic Pellets instead of bullets.

The early airsoft guns were very crude and unreliable, but they quickly gained popularity among Japanese shooting enthusiasts. In the late 1980s, the first airsoft guns began to be imported to the United States and Europe, where they also gained a following among shooting sports enthusiasts and collectors alike.  Before the arrival of airsoft, only rudimentary pellet guns that did not look realistic were available to young shooters.  Air guns in 4.5mm / 0.177 Caliber were also available but were not designed to look realistic, and they were too powerful to shoot at friends in a wargame type of gameplay.  Airsoft addressed a gap in the market and offered a form of a recreational air-powered gun that was high-powered enough to shoot accurately over acceptable distances, while at the same time being low-powered enough to not cause any serious injury.  Looking very realistic, these airsoft guns were also appealing to collectors.  Even models that were usually restricted to law enforcement only became available in airsoft, making them hugely popular.  Airsoft quickly became an alternative to paintball.

During the 1990s, airsoft guns became even more sophisticated and realistic, with improved accuracy and range. Improved mechanical engineering meant airsoft guns could shoot farther and perform more reliably.  The sport of airsoft evolved, with organized competitions and events becoming more common. Today, there are many tournaments globally with players competing in a variety of scenarios and game types.

Airsoft has also become a popular training tool for military and law enforcement personnel. The non-lethal nature of airsoft pellets allows for realistic training scenarios without the risk of injury or death. Many military and law enforcement agencies use airsoft guns for close-quarters combat training and other tactical scenarios.  Compared to using Simunitions ® and other wax bullet solutions, the cost of training with airsoft is much lower.

Overall, airsoft has come a long way since its beginnings in Japan in the 1970s. Today, it is a popular shooting sport and training tool enjoyed by people all over the world.

What is an Airsoft Gun?

An airsoft gun is a type of replica firearm that is designed to shoot non-lethal plastic pellets. They are used primarily in the sport of airsoft, where players engage in simulated combat scenarios and tactical games.

Airsoft guns are designed to look and feel like real firearms, but they use a different mechanism to fire projectiles. Instead of using gunpowder to launch a bullet, airsoft guns use compressed air or gas to propel a small plastic pellet, typically 6mm in diameter. There are hundreds if not thousands of airsoft guns available that you can buy.  The pellets are made of biodegradable materials and are non-toxic, making them safe for use in the environment.

Airsoft guns are available as airsoft rifles, airsoft sniper, airsoft pistols, airsoft shotguns, airsoft revolvers, and many more.  As time goes by, almost every model of real firearm ever made has been replicated in airsoft, although some of them are out of production and no longer available.

What is Airsoft Gear?

Airsoft gear refers to the equipment and accessories that are used by airsoft players to participate in the sport. This can include a wide range of items, and here are 9 things you should remember.

  1. Eye and face protection - Airsoft pellets can cause serious eye and facial injuries, so protective goggles or masks are essential for all players.

  2. Clothing - Players often wear tactical clothing, such as camo pants and jackets, to help them blend into their surroundings during games.  A new style of play called “Speedsoft” sees players dressed in bright clothing, in a style much more similar to paintball.

  3. Footwear - Sturdy, comfortable shoes or boots are important for players to be able to move quickly and safely during games.

  4. Airsoft gun - Players will need an airsoft gun to participate in games. This can be an electric, gas, or spring-powered model.  As the old saying goes, don’t bring a knife to a gunfight and this goes for airsoft games as well.  If everyone at a game is playing with electric or gas-powered guns, then playing with a spring pistol or rifle may put the player at a serious disadvantage.

  5. Magazines - Magazines are used to hold and feed airsoft pellets into the gun during gameplay.  Players usually carry multiple spare magazines on their bodies to reload airsoft guns during long games.

  6. Batteries and chargers - Electric airsoft guns require rechargeable batteries and chargers to operate.

  7. Gas canisters and propane adapters - Gas-powered airsoft guns require compressed gas canisters and adapters to operate.

  8. Tactical gear - Players may also use tactical vests, pouches, and holsters to carry extra magazines and other gear during games.

  9. Communication equipment - Some players may use radios or other communication equipment to stay in touch with their teammates during games.

Overall, airsoft gear is an essential part of the sport and can greatly enhance a player's ability to participate and succeed in games.

Airsoft Teams

Setting up an airsoft team can be a challenging but rewarding experience. Here are some steps to follow when setting up an airsoft team:

  1. Define your team's goals and objectives - Before you start recruiting members, it's important to establish what your team is trying to achieve. Will you be participating in local tournaments or just playing for fun? Will your team focus on a particular style of gameplay, such as milsim or speedsoft? Having a clear sense of your team's goals and objectives will help you attract like-minded players.

  2. Recruit team members - Once you have a clear sense of your team's goals, you can start recruiting members. You can advertise your team on social media or airsoft forums, or you can attend local airsoft games and meet potential recruits. Look for players who share your team's goals and have a positive attitude.

  3. Establish team rules and procedures - It's important to have a clear set of rules and procedures in place to ensure that your team operates smoothly. This can include rules around communication, gear requirements, and conduct during games.

  4. Develop team tactics and strategies - As a team, you should work together to develop tactics and strategies that will help you succeed in games. This can include practicing specific scenarios or developing specialized roles for team members.

  5. Invest in team gear and equipment - To be competitive, your team will need to invest in quality gear and equipment. This can include airsoft guns, magazines, eye protection, tactical gear, and communication equipment.

  6. Participate in local games and tournaments - Finally, to build your team's reputation and gain experience, you should participate in local airsoft games and tournaments. This will give you the opportunity to learn from other players, refine your tactics, and build relationships with other teams.

Setting up an airsoft team takes time and effort, but with the right approach, you can create a successful and rewarding team experience.

Airsoft Fields and Ranges

Airsoft fields and ranges are specially designed areas where players can participate in airsoft games and practice their skills. These areas can be indoor or outdoor, and they can offer a variety of different terrain and scenarios to challenge players. Here are some examples of airsoft fields and ranges:

CQB (Close Quarters Battle) Fields - These indoor fields are designed to simulate urban environments, with buildings, rooms, and corridors. They are often used for fast-paced games with short engagement distances.

Outdoor Fields - Outdoor fields can vary in size and terrain, from wooded areas to open fields. These fields often offer a more realistic environment for airsoft games, with natural obstacles and cover.

Milsim Fields - These fields are designed to simulate military scenarios, with players taking on specific roles and objectives. They often require more strategic planning and coordination than other types of fields.

Speedsoft Fields - These fields are designed for fast-paced, high-energy games with short engagement distances. They often have inflatable barriers and other obstacles to create an exciting and challenging environment.

Target Ranges - Target ranges are designed for players to practice their shooting skills and test out new equipment. They can be indoor or outdoor, and may offer different types of targets and challenges.

When choosing an airsoft field or range, it's important to consider factors such as location, safety measures, and the types of games and scenarios offered. Many fields and ranges also have specific rules and regulations, so be sure to familiarize yourself with these before participating.

Cost of Airsoft

The cost of airsoft can vary widely depending on several factors, such as the quality and type of equipment, the frequency and type of games played, and the location of the airsoft field or range. Here are some of the costs associated with airsoft:

Airsoft Gun - The cost of an airsoft gun can range from less than US$50 for a basic spring-powered gun to several hundred dollars for a high-quality gas or electric gun.  High-end collector-grade models made from steel can cost upwards of US$1000.

Gear and Accessories - Airsoft gear and accessories such as protective eyewear, clothing, and tactical gear can range from relatively inexpensive to several hundred dollars.  Some players opt for real scopes and tactical gear, which can be much more expensive.

Ammunition - The cost of airsoft ammunition, which comes in the form of plastic pellets, can vary depending on the quality and quantity purchased.  But typically a bag of 3000 rounds can cost less than US$10.  If you want higher quality BBs that are heavier, then you pay more.  Heavier BBs will less susceptible to wind and tend to be more accurate.

Field Fees - Airsoft fields and ranges typically charge a fee to use their facilities. These fees can range from US$10 to US$50 or more per session.

Travel Costs - If you need to travel to participate in airsoft games, you'll also need to factor in the cost of gas or transportation.

Overall, the cost of airsoft can range from a few hundred dollars to several thousand dollars per year, depending on the level of involvement and the quality of equipment. It's important to consider these costs when deciding whether to participate in airsoft games, and to budget accordingly to ensure that you can afford the necessary equipment and fees.  Do keep in mind that airsoft guns will require maintenance to keep them running reliably and that might also cost money.

Airsoft Laws and Legality

Here are some general laws and legalities of airsoft:

Age Restrictions - In many countries, including the United States, the minimum age to purchase or own an airsoft gun is 18 years old. Some states and municipalities may have additional age restrictions, so it is important to check local laws before purchasing or using an airsoft gun.

Use in Public - It is generally illegal to use airsoft guns in public places, including parks, streets, and other public areas. Most airsoft games are held on private property or designated fields, where safety measures can be implemented.  The most obvious danger of using an airsoft gun in public is that law enforcement officials may mistake them for real firearms, and end up shooting you.  Be smart and play safe!

Transportation - When transporting airsoft guns, they should be unloaded and stored in a secure container or bag. Some countries or states may require airsoft guns to be transported in a specific manner, so it is important to check local laws.

Safety Measures - It is important to wear appropriate safety gear, such as eye and face protection when playing airsoft. Some airsoft fields may require additional safety measures, such as full-face masks or gloves.

Modifications - Modifying airsoft guns to increase their power or range may be illegal in some countries or states. It is important to check local laws before making any modifications to your airsoft gun.  Many countries have power limits.  For example, Japan has a legal limit of 0.98 joules, which translates to 328fps (feet-per-second) using a 0.2g BB.  France and Hong Kong have a 2-joule legal limit, which equates to 468fps using a 0.2g BB.

Brandishing - It is illegal to use an airsoft gun to intimidate or threaten others, or to brandish it in a public place. Airsoft guns should be treated with the same respect and caution as real firearms.  Performing such acts can result in prosecution with the same seriousness as using a real firearm.

Permits - Some countries or states may require permits or licenses to own or use airsoft guns, especially if they are higher-powered or designed to resemble real firearms.  Examples include the Netherlands and New Zealand.

It is important to check local laws and regulations regarding airsoft guns before purchasing or using them. Ignorance of the law is not a defense, and violating airsoft laws can result in fines, confiscation of the airsoft gun, or even criminal charges.

How to Play Airsoft?

Playing airsoft can be a fun and exciting way to spend time with friends, but it's important to follow safety rules and guidelines to ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable experience. Here are some general steps to follow when playing airsoft:

Get the right gear - Before playing airsoft, you'll need to make sure you have the right gear. This includes an airsoft gun, protective eyewear, and appropriate clothing. A good airsoft gun is one that is reliable and accurate, but also fits your personal style of play. Protective eyewear is essential to prevent injury, and appropriate clothing should include long sleeves and pants to minimize the risk of injury from pellets.

Find a safe and appropriate location - Airsoft should be played in a safe and appropriate location, such as a designated airsoft field or private property with permission from the owner. Make sure the area is free from hazards and obstacles that could cause injury, and is out of sight from the general public.

Set the rules - Before starting the game, establish the rules with all players. This should include rules for safety, gameplay, and conduct. Make sure everyone understands the rules and agrees to follow them.  The most fundamental rule is to call your hits.  Unlike paintball, airsoft BBs do not leave a mark so its up to the person getting hit to call their hits.

Organize teams - Divide players into teams and assign objectives for each team. These objectives could include capturing a flag or eliminating the other team's players.

Start the game - Begin the game by announcing the start and let the teams begin their objectives. Make sure everyone is following the rules and staying safe.

Play fair - Cheating ruins the game for everyone, so make sure everyone plays fair. This includes not overshooting or shooting players who have already been eliminated.

End the game - Once the objectives have been completed or the time limit has been reached, end the game. Make sure all players unload their guns and put them away safely.

Debrief - After the game, debrief with all players to discuss what went well and what could be improved. This is a good time to discuss safety concerns or rule violations.

Remember, safety is the top priority when playing airsoft. Follow the rules and guidelines, and make sure everyone is on the same page before starting the game. Have fun and enjoy the experience!
