Choosing an AEG: Gearbox, Inner Barrel and Hop-Up

Choose an AEG as a complete system, not by a single upgrade label. Battery, connector, magazine, gearbox and hop-up must work together. V2, V3 or precision barrel wording alone does not prove compatibility or better accuracy.

Read the specification before choosing parts

Gearbox: the motor drives gears and a piston/spring air-compression system. V2 and V3 identify architecture families, not universal spare-part standards. Check the manufacturer's exact version, especially where electronics or proprietary parts are involved.
Inner barrel: compare length, diameter and the required mounting/hop-up pattern. A tighter bore is not, by itself, proof of better grouping.
Hop-up: identify the hop-up chamber, rubber/bucking and nub. Their fit and condition matter alongside consistent BBs and clean contact surfaces.
Power and feeding: match the specified battery voltage, format and connector, plus the exact magazine family. An AEG magazine is not a gas-rifle magazine.

AEG example: G&P Stoner 63 MK23 MG

The G&P Stoner 63 MK23 MG listing specifies a V2 gearbox with 8 mm bearings, an electric 1,200-BB magazine and a battery compartment in the fixed stock; the battery is not included. Its stated weight exceeds 4.5 kg. Those details help compare carrying weight, magazine operation and battery space. They do not establish that every V2 component fits or that this model uses a particular precision barrel. Check the exact part reference and current availability.

Common symptoms: what to check first

The AEG does not respond

Start with the battery charge, connector and fuse if fitted. Follow the manual rather than repeatedly pulling the trigger. Abnormal heat or smell is a reason to stop.

The motor turns but BBs do not feed consistently

Check magazine seating, the correct BBs and visible obstructions. The magazine, hop-up chamber and nozzle can each contribute to feeding problems; the symptom alone does not identify a replacement part.

The trajectory is inconsistent

Check BB quality, barrel cleanliness and hop-up condition before assuming a precision barrel will solve it. Keep the BB type consistent during checks.

Semi-automatic cycling is irregular

A weak battery, incomplete cycle, trigger components or electronics may be involved. A recurring fault needs diagnosis for that exact model. Do not force the mechanism or buy a generic V2 part solely because the symptom sounds familiar.

When to choose a technician

Stop using an AEG with grinding noises, persistent overheating or repeated stoppages. Gearbox opening, shimming and electronic diagnosis require the correct tools and model knowledge. Bring the product reference and a clear description of the symptom.
