Choosing Airsoft: AEG, GBB, CO2 and Spring

Start with the operating system and the exact model, then choose compatible magazines and consumables. A familiar appearance does not establish what powers a replica or which accessories fit it.

Power source and blowback describe different things

AEG refers to an electric airsoft gun. Spring models use manual cocking. Gas and CO2 describe power sources, while GBB means gas blowback. A CO2 pistol can also be a GBB pistol. GBBR commonly identifies a gas-blowback rifle; the acronym alone does not identify a magazine standard.

Which type fits your priorities?

• AEG: compare battery format, connector, magazine type and gearbox. Read the AEG selection checklist.
• GBBR: compare the model's controls, magazine system and upkeep. See G28, SCAR-H and MWS-style platforms.
• GBB or CO2 pistol: select the manufacturer, generation and approved power source first. Compare Glock 45, Glock 42 and CZ Shadow 2.
• Spring: choose manual operation when that is the experience you want, not on the assumption that every spring replica is a precision rifle. The Tokyo Marui SAA.45 Artillery is a spring revolver.

A spring rifle example: ARCHWICK MK13 MOD 7

The ARCHWICK MK13 MOD 7 listing specifies manual bolt-action spring operation, a 30-BB magazine and adjustable hop-up. This is a different operating experience from an AEG or GBBR. Compare the manual action, stock adjustment and magazine format; the model name alone does not establish a tested range or compatibility with another sniper system. Four checks before choosing a product

1. Exact manufacturer, model and version.
2. Power source and compatible magazine or cartridge reference.
3. Included items versus separately sold consumables.
4. Current product availability and the applicable manufacturer's instructions.
