Product Description:
Real Steel Background
The FN SCAR ? Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle ? was born from a U.S. Special Operations Command requirement issued on October 15, 2003, calling for a modular, multi-calibre weapon platform to replace the ageing M4/M16 family within special operations units. FN Herstal of Belgium won the development contract on November 4, 2004, and delivered two parallel rifles under the programme: the SCAR-L (Mk 16 Mod 0) chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO and the SCAR-H (Mk 17 Mod 0) chambered in 7.62x51mm NATO. The SCAR-L, designated the Mk 16 by USSOCOM, was intended to supersede the M4A1 carbine, the Mk 18 CQBR, and the Mk 12 SPR within special operations service, offering a lighter, higher-capacity assault configuration alongside its heavier 7.62mm sibling. True to its modular philosophy, the SCAR family was engineered around interchangeable barrel assemblies in three lengths ? Close Quarters Combat, Standard, and Long Barrel ? allowing a single receiver to be reconfigured for different mission profiles. The monolithic aluminium upper receiver carried an uninterrupted top Picatinny rail, while the polymer lower housed ambidextrous controls and accepted STANAG magazines, giving the SCAR-L a familiar yet thoroughly modern ergonomic foundation. Its side-folding, adjustable stock let the rifle be shortened for vehicle and urban work without losing the ability to shoulder it properly. After low-rate initial production testing concluded in June 2007, the first rifles reached operational units in April 2009, with a battalion of the 75th Ranger Regiment becoming the first large unit deployed into combat with the platform. In SOCOM's notorious Dust Test, the SCAR family outperformed the M4 by a wide margin. Yet in June 2010, USSOCOM unexpectedly cancelled its Mk 16 procurement, judging the 5.56mm SCAR too marginal an improvement over the M4 to justify the cost. The SCAR-L nevertheless went on to serve with more than twenty nations and remains one of the most recognisable modern rifles in the world, its silhouette a fixture of special-operations imagery, films, and video games.
Product Details
Crown, working under official licence from FN Herstal, brings the SCAR-L to the entry-level market as a faithfully reproduced air-cocking replica. Rather than an unlicensed approximation, the rifle carries genuine FN Herstal markings and the authentic SCAR-L design, and it is built entirely from polymer ? a deliberate choice that keeps the rifle light, manageable, and approachable for shooters of any experience level.
Externally, the rifle is built around a polymer SCAR-L upper receiver with a built-in integrated handguard, carrying the engraved "FN HERSTAL" logo marking, paired with a polymer lower receiver. The polymer outer barrel is finished with a muzzle brake, and polymer Picatinny rails measuring 105mm are fitted on both sides to provide mounting space for accessories. Furniture is polymer throughout: a side-folding retractable stock that folds to the side and extends through five positions so the rifle can be set up for the shooter or shortened for transport, a pistol grip, and a foregrip for a stable forward hold. Sighting is handled by a polymer flip-up front sight with a dummy gas block and a polymer flip-up rear sight, both of which fold flat when not in use.
Feeding comes from a genuinely unusual polymer magazine with a 500-round capacity. Its structure differs markedly from most airsoft magazines on the market: rather than a conventional follower-and-spring arrangement loaded round by round, the magazine is filled by pressing the magazine spring down at its position within the magazine, drawing the magazine spring guide and spring toward the rear, then rocking the magazine from side to side so the BBs settle into place easily ? a novel mechanism that lets a very large quantity of BBs be carried and loaded without fuss.
The controls are polymer throughout ? a fire selector, a magazine release, and a trigger ? keeping the rifle consistent and light. Operation follows the air-cocking pattern: drawing the polymer bolt on the right-hand side rearward cocks the action, and one pull chambers and fires a single BB. A built-in hop-up system adds backspin for enhanced range and accuracy. The rifle is very light indeed, so there is no sense of weight to fight during long sessions, and its modest output makes it an easy, unintimidating introduction to airsoft ? well suited to beginners finding their feet, while the authentic licensed FN Herstal detailing also makes it a natural stand-in for film and photography prop work. As with any airsoft gun, proper eye protection should always be worn.
